New Paper Airplane Record!!

This is what happens in February when there is nothing going on in sports. We get paper airplane records set!

Joe Ayoob, a former QB for U.C. Berkley out in California has apparently thrown this paper airplane a whopping 226 Ft 10 inches. That shatters the former record held by Stephen Kreiger of 207 Ft 4 inches.

The clip is pretty cool to watch, especially for those of you out there, like myself, who loved to build paper airplanes when they were a kid. Hell, I still love to do it now.

Perhaps if Ayoob could throw a football this well, he'd be an NFL star right now. OR, maybe he is going to send this around to NFL teams and see if he can work an invite to training camp this season. I haven't noticed Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III doing anything this spectacular.

Not Much to Say

This is relatively non-sports day. NBA All-Stars, couple meaningless hockey games. Basically, not much.

But, I'll talk about the only non-sports day out of the whole year: The day after the MLB All Star Game. I believe that it is the only day the entire year that none of the 4 major sports or their college equivalents play. It is a day of reflection, regrouping, and preparation for the future.

Kind of like the Jewish Yom Kippur.

We'll be back tomorrow with some NBA picks and beginning on March 1 we will have some MLB team previews, fantasy baseball predictions, and some NCAA Basketball articles.

Alex Rodriguez Offers' Lin a Place to Crash

Basketball Messianic figure Jeremy Lin has become famous over the last two weeks for his excellent play on the court, but also for his crazy living situations. He was sleeping on his brother's couch for a while, moved over to Landry Fields' place for a few nights and has recently finally found a stable living situation by renting David Lee's old apartment.

So it looks like Lin has finally found a stable place to shack up, but A-Rod has to throw a monkey-wrench into the situation.

"If he's still looking for a place to crash, maybe he can crash in my apartment." said Alex a few nights ago.

How Lin possible turn that down. A chance to live with one of the coolest guys out there right now, I don't think I'd rather stay anywhere than in Rodriguez's guest bedroom. Plus, have you seen A-Rod's girlfriend!! I'm sure she could set Jeremy up with a couple of her friends.

Here's a picture of Torrie Wilson - Alex's girlfriend - just to get your attention.

2012 NCAA Announcers

We are getting close to the NCAA Tournament, the first one without the infamous Gus Johnson in quite some time. All in all, the announcers are similar to last year, with the dual-studio shows and Ernie Johnson and Gregg Gumbel splitting time in the main one. I'll post the listing here with some comments at the bottom of the page.

Jim Nantz and Billy Packer
Marv Albert and Steve Kerr
Verne Lundquist and Bill Raftery
Kevin Harlan, Len Elmore, and Reggie Miller
Ian Eagle and Jim Spanarkel
Brian Anderson and Dan Bonner
Tim Brando and Mike Gminski
Spero Dedes and Bob Wenzel

So with Gus Johnson gone, Harlan moves up to the #4 spot which means that he'll get to call 2nd weekend games. Harlan is great and could easily be a #1 announcer in the future. I really don't like that Ian Eagle keeps getting bumped for Marv Albert. Eagle is still up and coming, but he is very knowledgeable and simple. With him, it is about the game not about the announcer. Other than that, Brian Anderson joins the team this year and takes over Kvin Harlan's old spot while Harlan takes over Gus Johnson's. Of course, Lundquist and Raftery are reunited again. The two make for one of the most fun broadcasts you will watch for any sporting event and it is a pleasure every year to watch the two of them call the games every year.

As for the studio setup, it is the same as last year. Ernie Johnson and Greg Gumbel will trade off hosting the main set with Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Greg Anthony. Matt Winer will host the 2nd studio analysis along with Seth Davis and Steve Smith. For the Regional Finals and Finals coverage, Ernie Johnson replaces Winer in the 2nd studio and Greg Gumbel is the sole host for the main studio.

And that is that. I wish that Seth Davis would replace Kenny Smith in New York, but I'm sure that Smith will be much improved in year two. It doesn't really matter anyways because the main story is and will always be the students and the game, no matter who is covering the games.

Kosher Hot Dogs at Citi Field

If you enjoy a good kosher hot dog and are going to a Mets game on Friday night or Saturday this season you are out of luck. The kosher stands will not be in service those times this season so as not to offend the religious Jews who observe the Sabbath and prefer that the kosher establishments be closed at those times as well.

To me, this makes perfect sense. The kosher stands are in place to accommodate the many religious Jews in the New York area who attend Mets games and want to enjoy some classic ballpark food. Since they won't be going to the games on the Sabbath anyways, then why have the eateries open, especially if it'll pose a problem.

Burnett Traded to Pirates

Well this is a first. The Yankees, desperate to save money, have traded an aging star pitcher to a small market team for future prospects. That seems a little backward...

Maybe, but it is entirely true. The Yankees will pay 20 of the remaining $30 million or so left A.J. Burnett's contract and in return the Yankees receive two prospects in single-A ball who have yet to be decided. The deal is likely to be finalized this week, just in time for pitchers and catchers to report to Florida for spring training.

Burnett was sort of a mistake here in New York and it never seemed like he was truly comfortable pitching in the intense New York media market. He did play rather well in a few playoff games, but the fans never rallied around him and his poor regular seasons were too much for him to overcome. In the end, although he is a decent pitcher, it is best for him to go. Another poor regular season would have been absolute Hell for him to deal with. It was an issue that neither he, the Yankees, or the fans probably wanted to deal with.

But, I am super high on Burnett to be a great pitcher out in Pittsburgh. Definitely draft him in your fantasy baseball leagues, he is probably going to be a huge steal.

Jeremy Lin and Race

Jeremy Lin has been a great player over the last week and he has scored more points in his first 4 NBA starts than anybody in the history of the NBA. More than LeBron, Kobe, Michael, Hakeem, Lou, Wilt, Magic; The Most!! Of course, he is not the best player in NBA history, and in all likelihood he will come off his high really soon, but for now it is fun to watch him. He very well could be the PG of the future for the Knicks, or any other team, and at worst it looks like he'll be a serviceable backup for his career.

Of course, a certain moron boxer has decided that race is the main argument in this debate. Floyd Mayweather is suffering from a serious case of foot-in-mouth-disease.

“Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he’s Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don’t get the same praise,”

Well, once again, we average folk are forced to consider the delicate balance of race when all we want to do is watch sports.

So I guess, by Mayweather's logic, we shouldn't have made a big deal about Jackie Robinson because, after all, white people do the same thing every night. Maybe Doug Williams and Warren Moore should have been ignored because, after all, White QBs had done that every night. Maybe we shouldn't have made a big deal about Barack Obama because, after all, a bunch of other white people had been elected President before.

And you know what, Mayweather is right, we shouldn't make a big deal about race anymore. We can move beyond that because the hard division between all of us are more or less erased, certainly in sports. This is what makes Mayweather's comments even more unbelievable. Let things be and don't always look for the racial undertones in the story. Trust me, there are for more blatant offensives to deal with. (See Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra)

We are not praising Lin because he is of Chinese descent, we praise him because of the underdog story. And you know what, if he was White, Black, of Hispanic, we would be doing the exact same thing.

Jeremy Lin's Sleeping Arangements

This Jeremy Lin kid is what Knicks' fans have been waiting for ever since they traded Wilson Chandler and Danilo Galinari last season; a young home grown stud. Ok, Lin wasn't drafted by the team, but this is his first real shot to play in the NBA and he is making the most of it. He is the first American born player of Chinese descent to play in the NBA and it looks as if not even the Great Wall of China wouldn't be enough to stop him from scoring points.

As the Knicks cruise to another victory tonight in Washington, Lin has scored at least 20 points again, his third in as many games. He had a whopping 8 turnovers against Utah on monday, but only against the Nets on Saturday and only 2 tonight. Over that span he has also put up 25 assists.

The Knicks have been searching for a point guard all season and although we don't know if Lin is the long term solution, he is certainly making his mark for now. I think it is important to remember in sports that it is not always the star players that guarantee championships. It is the little guys, and the underdogs that come out and perform big to win games. Lin is not a superstar, but he is doing just as much for this team than anyone else this year. Hopefully the Knicks will remember that and give him a chance to prove himself in the long run.

On an another note, it has been reported that Lin has been sleeping on his brother's couch for the last few months.

"He has his own couch" said Josh, the brother, which for anyone who has lived in New York is like saying "he has his own house" for people who live in Kentucky. Any space in NYC is good enough, even for an NBA player. Maybe he just wants to spend some time with his brother, or maybe mom and dad want the two to look out for each other. We've all been there.

I can only imagine what those conversations are like at night.

"Hey Jeremy, what are you doing tonight?"
"Going to the Knicks' game."
"Cool, where are your seats?"
"Josh, I'm playing you big doofus!"

Anyways, hopefully this guy is the real deal because he seems to be a pretty good guy and we New Yorkers love nothing more than watching an underdog rise to the top.

NBA Lock of the Day: February 8 2012

Finally, I got a win with Phoenix last night and not only did they cover the spread, but won the game straight up. Good for them and good for me.

Anyways, tonight I am taking the Knicks in Washington. New York has played well despite the absence of the their two stars; Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire. Actually, as I've been saying all season, they look better when only one of those two is on the courts. This Jeremy Lin kid looks like the real deal and I doubt that there is enough tape on him to truly figure out how to stop him. Plus, the Wizards are a pretty dysfunctional team and they really shouldn't be favorites against anybody.

So with that, there isn't really much else to say.

New York Knicks +1 1/2 WIN

Maria Menounos in a Giants Bikini

This story is slightly associated with sports and it gives us a great opportunity to post a picture of a beautiful woman wearing some NY colors.

Menonous is a huge sports fan and from Massachusetts so on "Extra" she made a wager with colleague A.J. Calloway on the outcome of the game. Calloway would wear a Patriots cheerleader costume if the Patriots won, and Menonous would wear a Giants bikini if Manning and the G-Men pulled out the victory.

Thank G-d the Giants won!

NBA: Lock of the Day February 7 2012

Here we go again.

Tonights pick of the day is... The Phoenix Suns

They are nearly 8 point underdogs to the Milwaukee Bucks tonight and while Phoenix has not been great this year, Milwaukee hasn't been any better. When they played earlier in the year, Phoenix won by 16.

On top of that, the Suns have won 3 of their last 4 while the Bucks are on a two game losing streak. I know that the Suns played last night, but I like them coming off a strong win to dominate another game tonight.

Certainly they will cover the spread.

Phoenix +7 1/2 WIN
Bucks

Walgreens Provides Savings

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Walgreens for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Walgreens is already the best pharmacy and drug store in the country, but with their new memberships plans they can cement their position as #1.  Under Walgreens' new membership program, for just $35 per year, you can get a family membership that includes a spouse and all dependents 22 years old and younger.  Even your pets can receive the benefits of this plan.

The plan costs just $20 for an individual.

Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens

So what are some of the benefits to the program?:

1. Discounts on important medical issues including flu shots, diabetic supplies, and pet prescriptions.

2. Savings on generic medication and more than the 8000 brand name products sold in Walgreens' locations across the country.

3. Bonuses when you purchase Walgreens' photo services and other brand products.

Giants win the Super Bowl

The reason why I haven't posted much about the Giants run through the playoffs is that you can get much better information about it from the major news outlets.

But I definitely want to acknowledge how great their season has been, how much praise Eli Manning deserves for his incredible season, that Tom Caughlin is one of the best coaches in the last 20 years, and that the Giants are once again the kings of New York football.

I promise you that next season I will be much more on top of the NFL season with both my picks, recaps, and opinions.

Craig Carton to Quit?

I truly think there is a 0% chance the Craig Carton of WFAN's Boomer and Carton morning show will resign from his hosting duties now that the Giants have won the Super Bowl.

In case you missed it, in October of this past year, Carton announced to a caller that he would quit his job if the Giants went on to win the Super Bowl this season. Well, they did and now callers have demanded that Craig own up to his loud mouthed talking.

As much as it bothers me that Carton likes to talk a big game, he should't lose his job over this but he should definitely take some sort of punishment for his incredible stupidity. On Al Duke's Facebook page, some fans suggested that Craig be reduced to "traffic girl" for a couple days or that he and update guy Jerry "Rello" Recco swap places. I like either of those two options. It should thoroughly embarrass Carton and at the same time preserve the hilarity that the show provides to us morning commuters.

These two and the various personalties on the show have provided with me many laughs on my way to class in the morning and even though Craig can get annoying at times, I wouldn't trade him for anybody in the world.
