Lebron James Bald??

Dwight Howard has just raised the ante in the Heat-Magic Rivalry.

Dwight Howard takes a joking, if needless, shot at LeBron’s hair

Oy, thats a funny but low blow Dwight. I guess the 4th quarter jokes have already gotten kind of stale. Still, you never know when the baldness will hit you so watch out Dwight. As soon as your hairline starts to retreat you'll get the same treatment.

Just for our followers here is a pic of Lebron's receding hairline.

I guess we know why he wears the headband all the time now...

Brandon Tierney Back on the Radio

Its not in New York, but at least he is back on the Radio.

Today, Brandon Tierney signed a contract with 95.7FM out in San Francisco and as you can tell from the picture, they are the only FM sports station in the Bay Area.

I'm sure that Tierney would have loved to stay in the New York area, and I'm sure that one day he will be back (see Jody McDonald), but for now we'll have to accept the fact that he'll be talking about California sports for the time being. I bet he'll still throw in some stuff about the Knicks and the Yankees here and there, especially when our New York teams make the trips out west. One thing is for sure, with 95.7 FM being the home of the San Jose Sharks, Tierney will have to start learning some Hockey lingo.

You can listen to their station online San Francisco 95.7 FM. I'm guessing their website will update soon when they officially plug in Tierney to their lineup.

Best of luck Brandon, we'll be listening to your podcasts.

As for you fans out there who wish to keep in touch, you can visit his Facebook Page or Twitter Feed.

Plus, we'll try to keep you updated if anything major happens.

Brandon Tierney To San Francisco (95.7 KBWF)

Well, our rival blog "BobsBlitz" is reporting that Tierney will join 95.7 KBWF out in San Francisco sometime in early August. Yes, this is the beginning of a Keith Olbermann vs Bill O'Reilly type feud.

But now that WE are reporting Brandon's move, it is officially official!!

KBWF 95.7 covers both the Oakland Athletics and the San Jose Sharks.

Still no word from Brandon himself so we'll be waiting on that.

DraftStreet: Fantasy Sports for Cash and Money

What's more fun than playing fantasy sports with your buddies?

How about playing fantasy sports for cash.

All of your dreams have come true with this relatively new website. To play, you need to join and make a deposit into your account. They'll give you a small percentage bonus for joining (I believe 20%) and you can then play instantly. Best of all -unlike most other sports-gambling websites- it is 100% completely legal. The Supreme Court has defined Fantasy Sports as a game of skill and is thus not considered gambling.

Types of Leagues:
1. HR Derby: Each team chooses 6 or so players and tracks the HR totals for a period of time (usually a week. At the end, the winner is the team with the most HRs.

2. Point Based: This works as every other old point league; you choose some players and add up the points. The person with the most points at the end of the day or the week wins.

Types of Drafts:
1. Salary Cap: I like this type the best because I don't have the time to do a traditional snake style draft every afternoon. They give you $100 thousand (in play money) and you choose your players based upon the prices they set for each player.

2. Snake Draft: Each player drafts in this traditional style draft at the designated time. Like I said earlier, this is probably more fun and I wish I could do it, but sadly I don't have the time.

Prizes:
Each league has a prize, whether its a weekly, HR Derby, or even a 3 person league daily. They take a 10% cut on every entry fee so if you're in a league with 3 people and an $11 entry fee the prize pool will be $30. The math gets a little more complicated as the size of the league increases but they have a formula to pay 2nd 3rd 4th and so on player that you can check out on the website.

If you don't want to pay to play, you can still play in free leagues and earn "street-cred" points that you can later trade in at their store for prizes.

Opinion:
This website is fun and most importantly legal. But, you're not going to make the kind of money to pay you're rent. Still, I would definitely throw $20 into it and see if you can make a little bit of cash. If you really believe in your fantasy sports skills you can enter into the big big leagues and even make $2000 in one night.

I personally have stuck to the smaller 3 or 10 person leagues because they give me a better chance of winning. Sadly though, I'm 0-4 so far so we'll have to wait to see what happens when I actually win. Till then, I urge you all to click on the banner link on the top of the page and give it a go. Heck, choose all the players on your favorite team and when you watch the game tonight, it'll be quite a bit more exciting.

Also of note, they do leagues for the basketball and football season as well.

Dodgers file for Bankruptcy

What!!

One of the most fabled franchises in sports history has now completly collapsed.

I'm not so fluent in Bankruptcy Law, but I think its safe to assume that this is not good for Frank McCourt's ownership of the team. No complaints here in that department, he'll still live comfortably for the rest of his life.

If I remember correctly, the Texas Rangers did this last year and it worked out fine for them. In fact, they made it all the way to the World Series. They didn't get kicked out of MLB, nor were they ever forced to shut down operations.

So why does this matter?

For starters, it shows that professional sports teams are actual businesses, ones with ups and downs and potential complications. For the past two decades or so we have seen sports expand so rapidly we forget that they are still subject to the economic realities of our times. Us Yankee fans (and Mets fans) know how ridiculous the expectations were for their season ticket packages and how their respective ownerships needed to revise their projections.

The NFL lockout looks like it will be resolved relatively soon because there is still plenty of money to be made on all sides. But, with this new economic reality hitting baseball (skyrocketing contracts coupled with reduced ticket sales) it may not be long before they are dealing with the same issues. If a couple more teams experience similar destructive ownership like the Rangers and the Dodgers, we could be headed for a future of Baseball instability.

Lets hope thats not the case...

Anyways, if all this means he is moving out to the west coast it'll be disappointing for us New Yokers, but in this day and age of internet radio, we can still listen to him. Sadly though, it probably won't be about the Knicks.

Heres to hoping he stays right here in NYC!

The Bamb-Tino: Tino Martinez goes yard on Old Timer's Day

Just like old times, Tino crushed a two run HR and drove in Bernie Williams to score the only runs in the 2011 Old Timer's Day at Yankee Stadium. David Cone takes the loss but he was all smiles as Tino rounded the bases. For those of us who grew up in the '90s and watched Cone, Wells, Tino, Bernie and others win and win and win, it was great to see all these players come back and play some baseball.

We'll get the clip up as soon as it is posted online.

Chad Pennington Moving to Fox

Good News for Football fans across America and the World: Chad Pennington is moving to the broadcast booth. His job is a little bit unclear right now, but Chad told the Charleston Daily Mail on friday that he would take a year off from Football this season.

"I'm actually going to take this year off, get healthy and do some work for Fox Sports,"

Fort those Jets fans out there, like myself, we can all reminisce about Chad's ups and downs with the team, lament his physical limitations, but also praise his incredible poise and leadership in the huddle and the locker room. Pennington is one of those players that will always be a "What if?"

What if he were a little stronger?
What if he didn't tear his shoulder?
What if he had a just one more big player to throw to?

Chad began his career when I was 12 and he was the Jets' QB through my formative years of watching the NFL. At points it was difficult to watch Pennington play, especially when it was clear that he was hurting. But, he will always be one of the Jets' best QBs even though he never won a Championship.

For those of you who don't know, Chad designed his style of play to his abilities and generally excelled on the field. He has the highest completion percentage in NFL history (66.00%) and his 90.1 QB Rating is good for 12th all time. I doubt that this will be the last of Pennington's career, there is almost bound to be one team looking for a veteran next season, but this seems like an appropriate time to give some reference to his playing career.

Pennington is a great addition to the booth and his knowledge of the game will enhance the viewing experience. His slight southern accent and soft spoken attitude will be a welcome change as analyst from the usual commentators. Heres to hoping that when Chad does eventually retire he signs a full time deal with FOX or CBS. I for one know that if he does, he will be known as one of the best.

David Tyree is Against Gay Marriage

Normally, we try to stay away from political positions here at the blog but when they and sports overlap we can;t help but comment.

Anyways, David Tyree recently made some comments about his position on Gay Marriage...

"If they pass this gay marriage bill, what I know will happen is this will be the beginning of our country sliding toward … it's a strong word, but, anarchy," Tyree said. "That will be the moment itself where our country loses its grip with what's right. Marriage is one of those things that is the backbone of society. So if you redefine it, it changes the way we educate our children, it changes the perception of what is good, what is right, what is just."

Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/football/2011/06/16/2011-06-16_new_york_giants_super_bowl_hero_david_tyree_warns_of_anarchy_if_gay_marriage_is_.html#ixzz1PU8ahR1p

So, here in the good ol' United States everyone is entitle to an opinion and one's position on Gay Marriage is of course an opinion. Whether you agree with it or not, we all must respect each other and their reasonings behind their stance: religion, being gay, moral standards, equality, having a gay sibling... the list goes on and on.

Sadly, Tyree has taken his right to an opinion to an extreme. I'm pretty sure that gay marriage will not lead to anarchy and I'm pretty sure that most people agree with me. Tyree is a public figure and he should know better than to state this idea out there for all the public to hear. Whatever you believe about gay marriage, it is a very divisive issue for both sides and Tyree is just going to annoy one side or the other by taking a hard stance. From a public image standpoint, its a pretty stupid comment.

However, Tyree should be praised for at least stating his opinion. To many of the modern day athletes are afraid to voice their opinions for fear of losing their endorsement deals. It is somewhat refreshing to hear an athlete speak his mind, rather than state the same cliches over and over again. I can't say I agree with Tyree's comments, but I can say that I'm happy that he has an opinion.

New Baseball Realignment Plan

Once again, Bud Selig is attempting to restructure the way that baseball is played although this time it might be for the better. A couple of possibilities have been proposed, including moving the Astros to the American League and eliminating all the divisions or simply moving the Diamondbacks to the American League West and retaining the current divisional and wild card playoff format. Lets take this step by step.

Astros Move to the AL
Ok, lets assume that the Astros move to the AL and they eliminate the entire division format and revert to two leagues of 15 teams. The top 3 teams would all make the playoffs and the 4th and 5th teams would have a one game "play-in" game. I personally love when baseball comes down to one game and its all hands on deck for the pitchers and the players. The managers get to make so many more decisions, mixing and matching batters with pitchers and even bringing in starting pitchers in the 8th and 9th innings to get one guy out. It makes for some of the most exciting play in sports. Normally, I think we should reduce the number of teams that make the playoffs in MLB, but this plan would only add one extra game to the playoff rounds and would add so much excitement to playoff baseball.

But this plan has its faults as well. Since there would be an odd number of teams in each league, it would force inter-league play throughout the season not just two weeks out of the year. This is great if you love inter-league play, but for those of you traditionalists out there it could pose a problem. In addition, I'm not sure why the Astros would move; they have always been in the NL. It would make a lot more sense to move the Brewers back to the AL where they were until 1998 when they got switched to the NL to make room for the Tampa Devil Rays.

So how would this plan affect the regular season. First of all, it would eliminate the unblanaced schedule that MLB has right now where each team plays 18 games against their own divisional teams while only 6 or 7 against the rest of the league. With 15 teams in the league, I would guess that every team would play 11 games against each other (14 x 11 = 154). Wait a second, 154 games is exactly as long as the old regular season used to be (up until 1961 for the AL and '62 for the NL). Sadly though, there is absolutely no way that Selig would reduce the number of games in the season despite all of its benefits. Since it would reduce ticket sales, it will never ever get considered. So, with the 8 games left (162-154=8) I would guess that they would schedule four two-game series of inter-league play for each team.

Diamondbacks move to AL West
This plan is really really simple. Everything stays the same with the divisions and wild card as it is now except the Diamondbacks move to create 3 divisions in the AL of 5 teams. Presumably, one team would move from the NL Central to the NL West to give them 5 teams in each NL division as well. Thats just a guess though. I'm guessing the scheduling would remain similar to as it is now as well with each division playing more games within their own divisions.

Barkley and Lebatard Bet: Dan Lebatard to wear speedo

We have no pictures (yet) of this potentially horrific event but I promise you that we will post all of the imagery as soon as we get it.

As some of you may have noted, part-time Parden the Interruption host (and full time Miami radio voice and columnist) and Charles Barkley (full time TNT basketball analyst) placed a bet on the results of the NBA finals. Its quite common for fans of certain teams or local politicians to place small wagers on these events and they usually result in hillarious conclusions. But usually, they are something small like the mayor of Pittsburgh dyeing his hair green for Green Bay (I don't think that happened but something like it).

However, Lebatard and Barkley bet that the loser would host Lebatard's radio show on the beach in nothing more than a speedo. (Lebatard took the Heat while Barkley backed Dallas). Normally it is the loser who must suffer shame, but in this case it is the rest of America who will need to wash out (gauge out?) their eyes after this event.

Honestly though, I'm glad Lebatard lost because now we get to see his chest hair in all its glory. For those fans out there of the PTI program, you are all familiar with Lebatard's repeated wearing of half buttoned shirts that give an excellent view of his hairy cleavege. Maybe he'll host the entire show in a speedo as well.

While I can't say I'm looking forward to this event, I can say that it will certainly provide us with laughs for the rest of the summer. Lebatard can be a little crazy sometimes but he knows how to laugh at himself which adds to his already likeable personality.

Mavericks Win NBA Finals

Ok, clearly I could have created a better title, but why stray away from the classics.

Anyways, the galaxy has been restored to order, justice has been served, and feel free to include all the other cliches you want to say about what happened during this series. Normally, as a Democrat, I tend to shy away from all things Texas but I found myself as probably the biggest Dallas fan in the world over the last 2 weeks. Dirk Nowitzki is now the best player in the NBA, Jason Kidd is the best Point Guard of all time and Jason Terry is my favorite player in the history of sports. Well, none of that may be true, but it shows the incredible support that Dallas had during this series, which nearly all stemmed from the universal distaste of the Miami Heat.

Its been a long season, which began with Miami vs Boston way back in October and has finally ended with Miami losing another big game when it mattered most. And, if you could really sum up this entire season into a short blurb, you could say that this whole season has been about Miami and their expertise. But, Miami rarely won a big game this entire season and only managed to create this mirage of prowess by beating up on the weaker teams this season. Interestingly though, it appeared as if they had finally turned the corner when they crushed Boston and Chicago in the playoffs this year and even I began to believe that the Big-3 would win the Big Game. However, LeBron seemed to fall apart in the Finals, just as he had fallen apart in many of his previous series against great teams in his career. I don't understand where he goes in these 4th quarters, but he generally plays great early in the game and falls apart late. It doesn't make any sense to me at all.

Its important to make mention that today is about the Dallas Mavericks and should not be about LeBron and Wade and Bosh and the Heat ( I know that was poor grammar, I did it on purpose). Dirk Nowitzki stunk last night, but his team played around him (and despite him) and won the game. Jason Terry was superb and played probably his best game in his career. On a side note, Terry seems to be one of best guys in the NBA and the real spokesman for the Mavs. He deserved this ring just as much as anyone else on the court.

So finally we can say what it takes to win a championship; a team. An individual cannot win, a single player cannot win. Guess what, it doesn't take two players and no it does not take three either. It takes an entire team; one where each player's skills compliment each other and a cohesive unit can form. (Take note NEW YORK KNICKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Congratulations Dallas Mavericks, for winning and for doing things the right way.

The Fab Five

I don't know how many of you have watched the ESPN 30 for 30s over the last two years, but most of them are very very well done, and worth the hour or two of watching. Specifically, I finall had the time this afternoon to sit and watch "The Fab Five" about the Michigan's star freshmen in the early '90s and their trials and tribulations in their search for a championship.

I'm sure most of you know their story, so I won't bore with you all the details, but I'll give a quick summary. The movie really focuses on Jalen Rose and Chris Webber, as they are probably the two most famous players from that team. It covers how the team came together, their early swagger, the relationships with Duke and Ohio St., and culminates with Webber's technical foul (on the timeout) in the '93 NCAA championship game.

But, besides the generic story (which is worth watching in and of itself) the documentary also covers the culture war that was led, in some ways, by this young hot-shot group of kids. They, in many ways, brought the hip-hop revolution to sports and ushered in a new age of sportsmanship. Trash talking was looked down upon, but after these 5 players began to use it regularly, more and more athletes used it in their game. Whether you like trash-talking or not, it is as much a part of an athletes talents as is heights, 40 yd dash, and other natural abilities. We praise players like Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Kobe Bryant, and Derek Jeter, for their rare combination of skill and game-intelligence. The Fab Five did a very similar thing with trash talking. It was never personal, just a way to get into the other guy's head.

I think their legacy will always be up for debate, but even if you don't like what they brought to Basketball, watching this documentary will help to understand their side of the story and why they did what they did. They were not professional athletes, many grew up in terrible conditions, and they were bring their street smarts to what was rapidly becoming a street game. I can't agree with all of their actions, but at the end of the day kids will be kids. We may love our athletes, particularly collegiate athletes, but they are still growing up and I'm sure we can all understand what that feels like.

NBA Finals Game 3 Preview!

Well, if you listen to pure statistics, they will tell you that this game is the biggest game of the NBA seasons. Since the NBA finals have gone to the 2-3-2 format in the late '80s, there have been 11 series that are tied 1-1 going into game 3. Of those 11 series, the winner of game 3 has one the series EVERY SINGLE TIME. I tend to buy into most of these statistics, but I'm selling this one. Neither of these teams are particularly dominant, and either one could easily win this evening but lose the following three in a row.

So what this game will come down to is. Dirk, Dirk, Dirk, oh and did I mention Dirk Nowitzki. Dallas lost Game 1 because he did not dominate and they will lose tonight if he does not control this game. I mentioned in an earlier post that Jason Terry would be the key to this series, but boy was I wrong. Terry is a good player, and will be important, but he is not going to make or break this series.

I think one thing that we've all learnt so far is that Dallas is a better team, but Miami's top heavy Big-3 do have enough to determine the outcome. But, like I said earlier, this is why Dirk Nowitzki is so important. If he is on fire, he can essentially neutralize LeBron, Wade, and Bosh and allow the rest of the Mavericks to win the game. Despite Wade and LeBron's friendship, they still seem a little off when they try to play together. Each tries to be the star just a little too much, and that will hurt them.

Prediction: Any time you expect a game to be close, you should always take the underdog and the points. But, with the spread at only -2 in favor of Dallas, there isn't really any benefit to playing the close game angle. If Dallas is going to win, chances are it is going to be by 2 or more. I do expect Dallas to win tonight, and while I'm not sure about the series overall, I expect them to win in 6 games as well.

Miami 88
Dallas 94

Baseball blah!

You know how there is always that point in the baseball season where it seems as if you are just waiting for August and the playoff races to begin to heat up. Well, I think that happened to me today. I could write some long blah about the last two Yankee games and how well Nova and Sabathia pitched, but I don't really think I could and I don't think any of you guys really care.

So, I'll just write about the NBA playoffs instead.

Chris Christie at the Ball Game

Normally, we try to keep sports and politics and separate, but in the rare moments that they do collide it is important to make note of it. Yesterday Governor Christie of New Jersey attended his son's high school basketball game by a state owned helicopter. Now clearly, it is very cool for the kid who gets to show off how awesome his dad that he is so important that he gets to come to games by helicopter, but after Christie has made government reform so important, it does seem odd that he would pull a stunt like this.

I'm not get all preachy and write up a Keith Olbermann-esque "Special Comment" (I love you Keith, can't wait to watch you on Current TV in 3 weeks and if by some chance you read this blog post send me a message countzacky@yahoo.com), but I think it is important to note at how important symbolism is in and out of sports. In baseball, iconic moments are shown countless times on the highlight reel because of what they represent just as much as their importance in the game. I could go on and list tens and even hundreds of such examples but I don't have nearly the time or space. In politics, symbolism is even more important and what Christie did is not only a waste of state funds, but also an incredibly stupid symbol. I don't know if their is any video of this clip, but this even is something that will be thrown in the Governor's face over and over and over again whenever he mentions wasteful Government spending.

NBA Game 1 Recap

Halfway through the 3rd quarter, with the Mavericks up by 8, I thought this game was over. Kidd and Nowitzki were going to cruise out the rest of this game and take the all important Game 1 and steal home-court advantage. But just like that, The Heat went on a 13-2 run and before I knew it The Heat were up by 8 with only 4 minutes to go. After that, the Mavericks had one lost opportunity to make it close but Jason Terry missed a 3 that would have cut the lead to 3 points with 2:30 to go, but it rimmed out and The Heat took this one 92-84.

The thing to take away from Game 1 is that this is going to be a long series and could very easily play down by the home games. I wouldn't be surprised if with 1 minute to go in game 7 these teams are still tied. It'll be interesting to see how things play out.

A couple of notes to take away: Dirk Nowitzki tore his left middle finger tendon which isn't that bad, bot not really that good either. Jason Terry stunk it up yesterday, but if he rebounds and has even a good game on thursday then the Mavs will easily win. This series will come down to the role players.
