Packers Win the Super Bowl

We had it right at the start of the season. The Packers will win the Super Bowl. Obviously, we are huge Jets fans here at the blog, but sometimes we put our objective hats on, and even less often we get something correct.

Congratulations to the Packers, Aaron Rodgers, Clay Mathews, and perhaps the most deserving of all; Donald Driver. Green Bay is a great franchise and will hopefully remain that way for a long time.

This game was great to watch and goes on par with the Steelers-Cardinals and Patriots-Giants games of a few years ago. The Steelers never had a lead, but they were always a threat to pull out a victory and I (and probably most of the world) thought Roethlisberger was going to lead his team down the field for the final score and victory.

We can only hope that next years Super Bowl will be as great as this one was.

Sadly, for both the young fans of the Yankees and those who remember him in the 90s, Andy Pettite will reportedly retire on Friday afternoon in a press conference at Yankee Stadium. His career began with the team in 1995 and although he never posted dominant pitching statistics, he was always a reliable pitcher who thrived under pressure, especially in the playoffs. He was an integral part of the Championship teams in the late 90s and his return to the Yankees in 2007 sparked a burst of talent that eventually led to the World Series victory in 2009.

His presence will be sorely missed in the Yankee rotation this season as it has been generally assumed that he would return this season. His departure leaves the Yankees with only 3 decent starters (Sabathia, Hughes, and Burnett) and will force the Yankees to scramble to fill the final 2 rotation spots with a combination of rookies and aging veterans. But, he will be missed for his veteran leadership role just as much in the clubhouse as he will be on the mound. The Yankees are trying to build a strong young rotation and Andy was a major part of the grooming process. Without him, the Yankees will miss a player who served as a coach these past couple of seasons as much as he was a player.

Most likely, Pettite has chosen retirement to spend more time with his family. But, the upcoming trial of Roger Clemens may have played a factor as well. Andy is expected to be a major witness for the prosecution and he may not have wanted his testimony to be a distraction during the season. The Clemens' trial is scheduled for mid-April which is early enough in the season that Pettite could still return by June if he decided he was healthy enough after the trial. I don't expect this to happen, but in the current world of sports and if the Yankees need him enough, it is impossible to know what will happen next.

Good Weekend for the Knicks

The Knicks split the weekend, but all in all it was a success. They beat the Heat on thursday night, but then played a tough road game the next night. You have to assumed that they would lose that game, coming off no sleep and a huge victory the night before. They rebounded sunday and crushed the Pistons, which was a game that they were supposed to win.

If you listen to Michael Kay on the local radio here in NY you have probably heard him same that to be a great team you have to beat the bad teams and split with the good ones. The Knicks, for the first time in nearly a decade, are doing just that. They are beating up on the bad teams and accumulating wins. Then, they are playing decent against the good/great ones which is all you need to do once you get to the playoffs. Unlike football, basketball has 7 game playoff series. If the Knicks can split the first 6 games (I know the playoffs are a long time away) then it will come down to a game 7. As we all know in New York (for both the good and the bad) anything can happen in a 7th game.

All in all, it looks like the Knicks are well on their way to the playoffs and will probably be the 6 seed. As always, comment or email me to keep in contact.
