Sweep of Padres

I a completely dominating performance by the Yankees, they swept the Padres, allowing only 6 runs over the three games. What is even more impressive, is the "damaged" Yankee rotation allowed only 3 of those runs (2 by Rasner and 1 by Chamberlain). They have now won 7 in a row and have the 7th best record in baseball. Only one week ago they were tied for the 15th. They are showing that they are truly an elite team, despite what the talking-heads have been saying. Although the Yankees will eventually lose another game, they have made their point during the last week. The Yankees are a team to be reckoned with, and will fight to the end. They may not make the playoffs (THEY DEFINATELY WILL AND WILL WIN THE DIVISION TOO) but they will be a team in contention late into September.

Wang out for the count

It was recently reported that Wang will be out for 6-10 weeks and possibly more. With him out, the Yankees will need to look for another starter to replace him. They have already had to find replacements for Kennedy and Hughes, and will now need to have a third spot starter. Rumors have surfaced about either Brad Penny or Sabathia, but neither seem likely. David Wells' name is also being tossed around, but he too will likely not be chosen. Probably, the Yankees will try to rebuild from within and start another young gun. I suggest Dan Rieves but Jeff Karstens as also a possibility. One thing is for sure, The Yankees will need to survive another injury, or face elimination for contention for the playoffs.

Breaking News: Wang injured

For all of those watching the Yankee game you just saw this; Chien Ming Wang stumble towards home plate, only to be helped off the field and into the clubhouse. For a player who barely runs the base path, it isn't hard to imagine that he pulled a hamstring or some other leg muscle. Either way, it looks bad.

Mets Game postponed

Just as a quick info, the Met game has been postponed from Saturday afternoon to sunday afternoon, due to rain. Since the Mets and the Rangers won't play again this season, (or possibly years), they will be forced to play the make-up game tomorrow. However, there is more rain in the forecast for then so they will most likely just wait it out 'till all hours of the night.

Mussina wins again: Yanks win 8-4

For all those who said that Mike Mussina was washed up, old, and barely a decent reliever, you guys were all wrong. I however, was right. I have said since day one that Mussina would pitch well this year. Even I didn't think it would be this good though. I thought maybe 14-17 wins with a 4.65 ERA. Basically, a third starter. it would have been tough to expect him to be pitching this well, a potential 20+ win season and only a high 3 ERA. If he can keep this up, he will be in Cy young contention.

To the game now. The Yankees have played well in the last two games, and A-rod has been on fire. He hit another HR tonight, and is 3 for his last 7. To top it off, the Yankee bullpen is playing extremely well and has only give up one run in its last 10 innings, thats under a 1 ERA. With the way the Yanks are playing right now, against the weaker NL, they could finish this round of inter-league play with 7 or 8 wins. Not bad for a team that was written off as another bust just a weak ago.

Player of the Game: Alex Rodriguez takes the title tonight. He went 2-3 with a HR and an RBI. After Mussina gave up a 3 run HR in the first, Alex stepped up and hit a HR to start a rally that put the Yanks within 1. For all of those who said he only hits HR when they are up by a million runs, they are wrong. Alex is one of the biggest reasons this team is where they are. He certainly was the only reason last year.

Notes: It was announced recently that Phil Hughes will be out 'till at least August. The Yankees are not clearing him to even start throwing for two weeks, and after that it will be approximately 6 weeks until he will pitch for the team again. This means that Rasner and Chamberlain will likely close out the rotation along with Wang, Pettite, and Mussina for at least the next two months.

Tim Russert

Although he has little to nothing to with sports, Tim Russert passed away this afternoon of an apparent heart attack. He was an excellent analyst and a political figure for as long as I can remember. I enjoyed watching him when I did, and he got me through the 2000 and 2004 elections with his markerboard and calculator. He was the one that we could count on. He was only 58 years old.

Yanks may trade for Sabathia

It has been rumored that the Yankees are interested in acquiring Indian's starter C.C. Sabathia. He won the cy young award last year, but has pitched well below his potential this year: 4-8 with a 4.34 ERA. The Indian's hopes of reaching the playoffs this season are dwindling with every loss, which are coming frequently, and they will look to plan for next year. With Sabathia's contract expiring after this season, the indians may try to get some value for him, as they may not be able to afford him next year.

Why would the Yankees trade for him though? They already have 3 veteran starters in Wang, Pettite, and Mussina, all who have pitched well so far, and then any combination of 4 young starters. The only way this trade makes sense, is if they decide to send Joba back to the bullpen, and Kennedy and Hughes back to the minors to train for next year. Otherwise, the Yankees will have 8 starters for only 5 spots.

Happy Birthday Hideki: Yanks win 4-1

On Hideki Matsui's birthday, he got the best present a player could ask for; a grand-slam to give his team the victory. After Pettite looked shaky in the the first two innings, he recovered and allowed on two runners to reach base between the 3-8 innings, and retired the last 9 batters in a row. He struck out 6 and walked only 1, and threw 70 of his 113 pitches for strikes. The Yankee bullpen threw over 4 innings wednesday night, and they needed a rest. Andy gave them just that, and only Rivera was needed to come in for relief. He walked one and struck out two and continued his dominance as a closer. He only has 18 saves, which is 9 behind the league leader, but he has pitched the most innings of any closer and has the lowest ERA and WHIP amongst ANY pitcher in baseball.

Player of the Game: Obviously, its Matsui. He hit a grand-slam on his birthday, and that was the difference maker in tonight's game. He has only 33 RBIs and 7 HRs, but is batting 322, which is his career best.

Now it is

Holy smokes, anyone else see that game? It is perhaps one of the greatest games in Finals history, let alone the greatest comeback. In the next 30 years, we may never see another game (and 3rd quarter) like that.

Recap of the past week

I apologize for not posting in a week, but I was busy with finals. I will be posting on a regular basis again. Since, Giambi's walkoff slam, the Yankees have split their last 6 games, going 3-3. During that stretch though, they had 2 one-run losses, including a 2-1 loss friday night, and the a 3-2 loss monday afternoon. Those were both stellar outings by Rasner and Mussina respectively, and if the Yankees want to be considered an elite team as they once were, they need to win them. They would be only 5 games behind insteat of 7, as they are now. Right now, the Yankees are playing average, which is better than the below-average they were at the beginning of the season, but they need to be better. Their next e series are against Houston, San Diego, and Cincinnati, all of which have losing records. Right now though, so are the Yankees. They need to win at least 5 of these games and go 5-4. If they don't, it doesn't look too promising. However, the Yanks really need to win 6 or 7, but 5 is a reasonable number and it would be over .500. Anything less than that though, at this point in the season, is in-excusable.

Giambi saves the day

After a gruesome performance by Chin Ming Wang, the Yankees stormed back and scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th to beat the Blue Jays. In a game the Yankees needed to win, the offense pulled through, despite all the odds. After falling into a 7-2 deficit, the Yanks scored 2 in the bottom of the 5th and 2 more in the 6th to bring the game to 7-6. The bullpen held it there for 4 solid innings, including 2 by Jose Veras, and then Kyle Farnsworh came in. He allowed one run in the 9th to put the Jays up by 2 and their closer BJ Ryan came in to seal the deal. After retiring the first two batters, Jeter and Abreu, A-rod stepped to the plate. He lined a double into the gap and Matsui drove him in with a single. Manager Girardi chose to pinch hit for Jose Molina with slugger Jason Giambi, and he responded. He hit a 2 run towering shot into the right-field upper-deck, and th Yankees won 9-8. It was Ryan's first blown save of the year.

Detroit Wins!!!!

Holy smokes, I had no idea hockey could be so exciting. I barely watched hockey until last year when the Rangers started making their run at the cup and I never thought I would find myself watching any non-Ranger game. This one was something special though. Congratulations to the Penguins on a valiant effort but all the glory goes to the Red Wings tonight. Savor the moment, you earned it.
