Robertson shaky, but Yankees hold on

Yikes, 15 years of near perfection from Rivera and in the first save opportunity in his absence, the replacement nearly blows it.

But nearly is the key word here, as the Yankees and David Robertson held on to win a tight 5-3 ball game. The Yankees took an early 2-0 lead on a Raul Ibanez home run and although the Rays cut it to a one run game twice, they could never quite take control. Ibanez hit a second home run in the 7th and a late RBI double by Mark Teixeira in the 8th made it 5-3.

The 9th inning was a little closer than it should have been and although Rivera has blown saves throughout his career (including one against the Rays in Opening Day), it does not come as a surprise that the first save opportunity without Rivera would be a nail-biter. But Robertson struck out Carlos Pena with two down and the bases load, and what could have been a disaster became just another close ball game.

This is an important series for the Yankees who were swept by the Rays to start the season and who lead the Division by a couple of games over the Yankees. Obviously we are still very early in the season but the Yankees need to win at least 2 out of 3 to show that they can still compete, despite their horrendous starting pitching. They took a good step towards that tonight.

1050 ESPN Radio to go off the air.

1050's pathetically weak signal will get a boost with their move to the FM dial when on Monday their station will be carried on 98.7 FM radio. The FM stations are clearer and crisper and their signal strength generally carries much further than their AM counterparts. Legend has it that you can hear WFAN all the way in Florida on a cloudless, still, night. I know from experience that you can certainly hear it outside of Baltimore in the afternoon. 1050 sometimes gives out near Hunter College on the East Side of New York.

So what does this mean for the listeners. Well, until September 1050AM will remain as ESPN Radio while the signal can also be heard on 98.7FM. Then, it will become an all Spanish-language ESPN station and the normal programming will only be able to be heard on the new FM station. Even after the switch, the programming will (hopefully) remain the same.

ESPN radio has never been able to build the continuity that WFAN has. They constantly switch their talent, their talent's time slots and now are changing their station signal. From what I remember, except for a couple of big changes with Chris Russo and Don Imus a few years ago, WFAN has been exactly the same since they moved to 660 in the late 80s.

So, ESPN can try, but unless they start focusing exclusively on New York and start paying attention to their listeners, they will continue to run in a distant 2nd to WFAN.

Rangers Play Decisive Game 7 Tomorrow Night

Perhaps you've heard, the Rangers will close their first round series tomorrow night in what will be the NHL Game 7 in Madison Square Garden since the championship season in 1994. Obviously, this team has nothing to do with that one, but many are already drawing parallels. In any case, it is difficult to win a Game 7 on the road in no matter what sport and I would be shocked if Ottawa pulls out the history tomorrow night.

Here's why.

The Rangers have the best Goalie in the league in Hendrik Lundqvist and in the three games they've lost, each has been by only one goal. Ah, you will tell me that they lost Game 5 by a score of 2-0, but I'll remind you that the final goal was an empty-netter. So, since Lundqvist can keep them close, the Rangers only need to score a couple to keep them in the game. Now certainly, the Rangers have struggled to score, but they began to heat up in Game 6 and that will carry over into the next game.

To be honest though, I don't know that much about Hockey so I'm doing my best here. But I do know that New York teams don't lose important games here in New York.

Joey Salvia to Join Mike Huckabee

Apparently, it didn't take long for Joey Salvia to find another opportunity for his radio talents. A few days ago, Salvia announced he was taking his family to Texas to work with the former Arkansas Governor on his radio show.

Like with many retirements to "spend more time with my family", this one did not last very long and it was only a matter of time before an offer arrived that "was too good to refuse."

Anyways, we wish Joey the best of luck. He was great here in New York and he'll be just as good in the South.
